British pace ace Joffre Archer is on the brink of collapse after medical advisors recommended surgery to remove his problematic right elbow.
"Jofra Archer has been examined for right elbow pain by a medical advisor and he will have surgery tomorrow," said a statement from the Cricket Council of England and Wales.
The Archer had recently used a knife to pull a piece of glass from his hand, but his elbow had been a matter of speed for a long time. He missed a match on a tour of South Africa in early 2020 with the same problem and was also barred from taking the fourth Test against India earlier this year.
After losing the now banned 2021 IPL, Archer returned to the county championships for Sussex last week only to injure himself with an elbow in the second inning. He did not play Kent in the final two days of that match and was then sent off for two consecutive weeks against New Zealand the following month.
It is too early to calculate how long Archer will recover from the procedure, but England have a full summer and winter schedule this year, including homework against Sri Lanka, Pakistan and India, followed by the T20 World Cup and the Ashes Down Under series.
